Trans issues

Kids, sports, and schools.

“Schools are secretly giving kids sex-change surgery.”

"Your relative is claiming that schools secretly arrange or perform gender-transition surgeries on children."

What's actually true

There is no credible evidence that schools are secretly giving children gender-transition surgeries. These are medical procedures performed in medical facilities, not school services; surgery for minors generally requires parental or guardian consent. Some schools do allow students to use a different name or pronouns without notifying parents, depending on local policy and law—but that is not surgery.

Where they have a point

Parents understandably want to know about major decisions affecting their children. School policies about when to notify parents of a student's gender identity are a real debate, separate from the false surgery claim.

I’d be alarmed by that too, but there’s no credible evidence schools are doing surgeries. Some schools don’t notify parents about name or pronoun changes. That’s a real policy debate, but it’s a very different thing.

Then ask

Do you remember whether the story described an actual operation, or a school’s policy on names and pronouns?

“Trans athletes are taking over women's sports.”

"Your relative believes transgender women are becoming dominant in women’s sports."

What's actually true

Some transgender women have won women’s events, but individual wins don’t establish that they’re ‘taking over’ women’s sports. Participation data are incomplete, and there isn’t evidence of widespread dominance. Going through male puberty can confer athletic advantages that hormone treatment may not fully remove; how much that matters depends on the sport. Eligibility rules vary, and the NCAA barred transgender women from women’s competition in February 2025.

Where they have a point

Fair competition and meaningful opportunities for female athletes are legitimate concerns. Taking those concerns seriously doesn’t require treating every transgender athlete’s participation—or victory—as proof of a takeover.

Say this (15 seconds)

Some trans women have won, but that’s not the same as taking over. Fairness is a real concern—especially where male puberty creates an advantage. I’d rather look at the particular sport than make one sweeping claim.

Then ask

When you say ‘taking over,’ are you thinking about a particular competition, or women’s sports overall?
